  • 1 cup water To boil with other ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Neutral oil like canola or sunflower also works
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with a gluten-free blend
  • 1 large egg Can substitute with a flax egg for vegan
  • 1/2 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract

Coating and Dipping

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar For cinnamon sugar
  • 1-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon To mix with sugar for coating
  • to taste Chocolate sauce Store-bought or homemade

Instructions

Preparation

  • Combine the water, sugar, salt, and vegetable oil in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Remove the pan from the heat. Add the flour all at once and stir vigorously until the mixture forms a smooth ball and pulls away from the sides. Let it sit for 3-4 minutes to cool slightly.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla until the dough is smooth and pipeable.

Cooking

  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and line a sheet of parchment to fit the basket.
  • Fit a large star tip into a piping bag. Pipe 4-inch strips of dough onto the parchment.
  • Place the parchment with churros into the air fryer basket and cook for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Immediately roll the hot churros in cinnamon sugar.
  • Serve right away with warm chocolate sauce for dipping.

Notes

For dietary tweaks, possible substitutions include using coconut milk for a dairy-free dip and a flax egg for a vegan version. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
