Ingredients

Base

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (75/25 for juiciness)
  • 3 strips turkey bacon, chopped and cooked into the meat

Custard & Binder

  • 3 large eggs, whisked
  • 5 fl oz heavy cream (double cream if you can swing it)

Cheese & Topping

  • 7 oz sharp cheddar, grated (split half for the filling, half for the top)
  • 3 strips turkey bacon, chopped for the top

Pan & Seasoning

  • Butter for greasing the baking dish
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (plus black pepper to taste)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Butter a medium baking dish generously so nothing sticks.
  • Chop three turkey bacon strips and heat a frying pan, greasing with a pat of butter.
  • Add the turkey bacon and ground beef into the pan, season with salt and black pepper, and cook until meat is browned.
  • Transfer the cooked meat mixture to the buttered baking dish and spread it into an even layer.
  • In a bowl, whisk the eggs, then stir in the heavy cream and half of the grated cheddar.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the meat base, ensuring it soaks in.
  • Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and scatter the last three chopped turkey bacon pieces on top.

Baking

  • Bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.
  • Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Use good cheddar for the best melting and flavor. For neat slices, let the pie rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
