Ingredients
Cake Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (15–16 oz) Follow package instructions for eggs and water.
- 3 large eggs Use as specified on the cake mix box.
- 1 cup water Use as specified on the cake mix box.
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)
- 3/4 cup caramel sauce Store-bought or homemade dulce de leche.
- 8 oz Cool Whip Or stabilized whipped cream.
- 1 1/2 cups crushed Heath bars Or toffee bits.
Instructions
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to the temperature listed on your chocolate cake mix box. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- Prepare the cake batter following the package directions (eggs, water, and oil if required). Mix until smooth.
- Pour the batter into the greased pan and bake according to the mix instructions, usually about 25–35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for 8–10 minutes — still warm but not piping hot.
- Use the handle of a wooden spoon (or a fork) to poke holes all over the surface, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
- Slowly pour the sweetened condensed milk over the cake, letting it seep into the holes.
- Drizzle the caramel sauce evenly across the top.
- Spread an even layer of Cool Whip over the cooled cake. Smooth gently.
- Sprinkle the crushed Heath bars across the top and press lightly.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving.
Notes
Keep leftovers covered in the refrigerator; this cake is perishable due to the Cool Whip and sweetened condensed milk. Can freeze uncut cake before adding Cool Whip for up to 1 month. For best results, add topping fresh after thawing.
