Ingredients

Bread Base

  • 1 loaf loaf of brioche or challah bread Sliced into thick pieces

Custard Mixture

  • 4 large large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon alcohol-free vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Sugar for caramelizing To sprinkle on top before caramelizing

Optional Garnishes

  • Fresh berries For serving
  • Maple syrup For serving

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the brioche or challah into thick slices and arrange them in a greased baking dish so they sit close but not overcrowded.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
  • Pour the custard evenly over the bread, pressing slices gently so each soaks well.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours — overnight is better for fully soaked, custardy slices.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, until the top is golden and the slices are puffed and set.
  • Sprinkle a thin, even layer of sugar over the hot surface and caramelize with a kitchen torch until the sugar melts and turns golden; alternatively, place briefly under a hot broiler and watch closely.

Serving

  • Serve warm with fresh berries and maple syrup if desired.
