Heaven on Earth Cake
A delicious and easy layered dessert combining angel food cake, cherry pie filling, vanilla pudding, and whipped cream, perfect for summer gatherings and potlucks.
Ingredients
For the cake
- 1 standard tube cake Angel food cake (prepared from box or store-bought) Use a prepared cake to save time.
For the trifle
- 1 can 1 (21 oz) can cherry pie filling Alternatively, use about 2½ cups fresh cherries cooked down with sugar.
- 1 package 1 (3.4 oz) package instant vanilla pudding mix Check pudding package for exact milk amounts.
- 2 cups 2 cups cold milk For the pudding.
- 2 cups 2 cups heavy cream Use cold cream for best results.
- 2-3 tablespoons granulated sugar Adjust sugar in whipped cream to taste.
- 1 teaspoon pure alcohol-free vanilla extract Adds flavor to whipped cream.
Instructions
Preparation
- Prepare the angel food cake according to package directions and let it cool completely before cutting.
- Make the pudding by pouring the instant vanilla pudding mix into a bowl, adding the cold milk, and whisking for 2 minutes until thickened. Chill briefly if needed.
- Whip the cream in a chilled bowl by beating cold heavy cream with sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
- Cut the cooled angel food cake into roughly 1- to 1½-inch cubes.
Assembly
- In a trifle dish, layer the cake cubes, spoon a layer of cherry pie filling (about ¾ cup), then add a layer of vanilla pudding (about 1 cup), and finish with whipped cream.
- Repeat the layers until the dish is filled, finishing with a generous layer of whipped cream on top.
- Refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least 2 hours to let the layers set and flavors meld.
Notes
This trifle is best enjoyed chilled and serves as a beautiful dessert for gatherings. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. For variations, consider using blueberry or strawberry pie filling or adding chocolate shavings.
