Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 recommended for best flavor; leaner is fine if excess fat is drained
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger in a pinch)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (use low-sodium if preferred)
  • 2 cups cooked rice (white, brown, or short-grain)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (or canola/neutral oil)

Optional Toppings

  • sliced green onions
  • toasted sesame seeds
  • steamed or roasted vegetables (broccoli, carrots, snap peas)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the minced garlic and ginger. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.
  • Increase heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Break it up with a spatula as it cooks.
  • Cook until the beef is nicely browned and no pink remains, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if there’s a lot.
  • Stir in the soy sauce. Reduce heat to medium and let it simmer for 1-2 minutes so the flavors meld. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  • Spoon the savory beef over warm cooked rice. Top with green onions, sesame seeds, and any vegetables you like.

Notes

For gluten-free: use tamari instead of soy sauce. To make it leaner: use 90/10 beef, turkey, or tofu. Add sweetness with brown sugar or honey to enhance the flavor.
