Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 recommended) For flavor and juiciness.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce Use low-sodium if preferred.
  • 1–2 tbsp sugar (white or brown) Adjust to taste.
  • 1 tsp minced fresh ginger (optional)
  • 2–3 green onions thinly sliced, for garnish
  • 3 cups cooked rice (~1 cup uncooked)
  • 1–2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4–1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

Cooking

  • Heat a large skillet over medium and add 1–2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
  • Add the minced garlic (and ginger, if using). Sauté for 30–45 seconds until fragrant — do not let it brown.
  • Add the ground beef. Break it into pieces and let it sit undisturbed for 1–2 minutes so it can brown. Stir and continue cooking until fully browned, about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess fat if desired.
  • Stir in the soy sauce, sugar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well and cook for 2–3 minutes more until the sauce reduces slightly and coats the meat. Taste and adjust sugar or soy as needed.
  • Serve the beef over cooked rice and garnish with thinly sliced green onions.

Notes

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container within two hours of cooking. Store for up to 3–4 days. To reheat, warm gently in a skillet with a splash of water or soy to loosen the sauce, or microwave covered for 60–90 seconds, stirring halfway.
